LAYERING Clothing

Special for Northern California Outdoors Radio Show : Bryan Roccucci

WINTER IS ON THE WAY AND NORTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA HAS A LOT TO OFFER IN THE WAY OF OUTDOOR RECREATION. THE KEY TO SAFELY ENJOYING IT, IS KNOWING HOW TO DRESS, AND THIS MEANS LAYERING YOUR CLOTHING.

A GOOD LAYERING SYSTEM IS MADE UP OF THREE BASIC ELEMENTS, THE INNER LAYER, THE INSULATING LAYER AND FINALLY THE OUTER OR THE SHELL LAYER.

YOUR INNER LAYER, MOST OF THE TIME IS MADE UP OF THERMAL UNDERWEAR. IDEALLY THIS WILL BE MADE OF A PERFORMANCE FABRIC THAT WILL HOLD BODY HEAT AND ALSO PUSH MOISTURE AWAY FROM YOUR SKIN, KEEPING YOU DRY.

THE INSULATING LAYER SHOULD TRAP AND HOLD BODY HEAT AND THEREBY PROVIDE A GREATER DEGREE OF THERMAL INSULATION.

FINALLY THE SHELL LAYER IS YOU PROTECTION FROM WIND, RAIN, AND SNOW. WATERPROOF/ BREATHABLE FABRICS ALLOW MOISTURE VAPOR TO ESCAPE FROM INSIDE, BUT PREVENT WIND AND WATER FROM PENETRATING FROM THE OUTSIDE.

HERE IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT, THE BODY CAN LOOSE 60% OF BODY HEAT THROUGH THE HEAD AND NECK, SO DONíT FORGET THE HAT AND SCARF, AND DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU INTEND TO DO SOME TYPE OF GLOVES OR MITTENS.

DRESS PROPERLY AND ENJOY YOUR TIME IN THE OUTDOORS.
